Stomatherapy
 

"Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE) aims to help patients acquire or maintain the skills they need to best manage their lives with a chronic disease. It is an integral and permanent part of patient care" (WHO definition in 1998).

 

The Digestive Surgery department has been offering a Therapeutic Education program for Patients with a Digestive or Urinary Stoma since 2010. This program supports patients regardless of the establishment (public or private) where they were operated on.

Concerning the stomatherapy ETP program, it is organized as follows: ​

 

Beneficiaries: patients operated on, in emergency and/or in scheduled surgery with a colorectal resection with placement of a permanent or temporary digestive and/or urinary stoma

 

Stakeholders: stomatherapy nurse, dietician, surgeon

 

Skills to be developed:

The patient must be able to:

- perform hygiene care

- gradually understand changes to the stoma pouch

- recognize and manage skin complications

- know the principles of balanced nutrition and hydration

- maintain a satisfactory quality of life ​

 

Organization: in outpatient consultation and in hospital (for the surgical procedure).
